Artist Statement Lily Sturm When it comes to photography there is endless possibilities of what you can take photos of, I played around with this idea very much throughout this semester. Being able to combine different concepts and playing with different subject and editing techniques was a great opportunity for me to explore the art of photography. The main idea of most of my photos is to get the viewer to stop and really think about the story behind each picture. I did this by coming up with interesting subject concepts and editing them in a new funky way. I have a very specific style when it comes to photography, I like taking more creepy and uncomfortable photos so the viewer look at it and feels this discomfort. For my main photos I took a image of a girl standing in the middle if a field with a bunny mask and a wedding dress on and I edited it to have more of a euphoric feel to it.
I decide all of my subjects by taking one thing I really want to take photos of and I start thinking about how I want other people to view the subject itself. I then take another idea and I try to combine it, I will by then have a subject matter in mind and how I want to shoot it. After I take the photos I come back and I play with a lot of things on PhotoShop like filters, cut and paste, color, and the contrast of the photo. After I play around with the different editing techniques.
My biggest strength in photography would be taking photos at different angles and having a lot of photos to work with. This makes finding the perfect photo so much more easier and it is giving me more options to work with. When in a photoshoot I try to move around in different angles so that way the photos can have a edge to how they are seen. I didn’t want my photos to be boring and not something I was proud of, so I challenged myself to really work in different areas. Something that I wish I had done a little better with all of my photos would be to really sit down and edit my photos in a different way. I used a lot of the same kind of techniques in most of my photos and I wish I explored PhotoShop more to expand my knowledge and come up with new ideas to use.
My Digital Portfolio is probably one of the most worked on piece in my entire high school career. I have every art class that I’ve ever taken on it and it was really fun to play around with it again in digital photography because I would work on something new every week expanding my portfolio and making it the best it could be. All of my photos are on my digital portfolio and they all have research with descriptions and reflections attached to them. I think that it is super important to have a clean and effective portfolio because when colleges look at your application they are also looking at how your digital portfolio looks and if it is profession and packed with fun things.
My semester in digital photography has really opened my eyes to taking photos in different ways, it made me more comfortable with holding a camera and coming up with ideas. I definitely made me want to take photos more often and explore my creativity in photo taking. I plan to use photography in a lot of things in the future like taking pictures of plays and getting out and having a little photoshoot with my friends. I plan to use the things that I learned in different art classes and really challenge myself with new ideas that pop into my head.
